What to Know as a Bulldozer Operator

Bulldozers are popular heavy equipment machinery used on most job sites due to their ability to move and excavate material. Their tracks enable them to work on rough terrain, and their heavy-duty nature makes them valuable assets in construction. Having the tools and training to be a bulldozer operator gives you an advantage in the growing construction industry.

Keep reading to discover tips to be a better bulldozer operator.

What Makes a Good Bulldozer Operator?

Many of the skills and traits that make a good heavy equipment operator translate across machines. Employers on job sites are looking for certain qualities that set candidates out from the pack. Here’s what makes a good bulldozer operator:

  • Coordination — hand-eye and had-foot coordination help with dozer operation
  • Self-motivation
  • Problem-solving skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Aptitude for machinery
  • Patience and level-headedness

Why Receive Bulldozer Operation Training?

While OSHA doesn’t require certifications for bulldozer operators. Training from a specialized program can provide you with additional opportunities in your career. Schools that specialize in heavy equipment operation provide the tools and resources needed to excel in the industry.

Bulldozer Operation Basics

After receiving bulldozer operation training, the best way to get comfortable with operating heavy machinery is experience. The more time you spend in the cab, the easier operating a dozer will become. If you’re just starting, here are the basics of bulldozer operation.

  1. Turn the key in the ignition to start the engine.
  2. Adjust the speed control. It needs to start slow before increasing to full speed.
  3. Check the bulldozer’s controls are working properly before moving. The right joystick controls the blade and ripper, which dig and carry materials. The left joystick controls navigation.
  4. Point the left joystick forward to move straight ahead and back to reverse.
  5. Doze from front to back and work in the slot. This decreases the amount of materials that fall out of the blade.
  6. Press the decelerator to stop.

Safety Tips for Bulldozer Operators

Another key aspect of bulldozer operation is safety. When in the cab of heavy machinery, proper safety guidelines must be followed. Not just for your safety, but for the safety of everyone on site.

Here are some safety tips to help you stay safe — before, during, and after using the bulldozer.

Before Operating

  • Buckle your seatbelt.
  • Check fluid levels and various controls to ensure everything works.
  • Never allow passengers to ride with you.
  • Follow the proper site procedures.

While Operating

  • Work in the slot.
  • Operate slowly when near people and when on rough terrain.
  • Work efficiently.
  • Avoid water mains and overhead power lines.

After Operating

  • Park on even ground.
  • Lower the blade.
  • Allow time for the engine to cool down.
